Nairobi City - Kenya's Capital

Nairobi is the capital and the largest city of Kenya. The name Nairobi comes from the Maasai phrase 'Enkare Nairobi', which translates to ' place of cool water', a reference to the Nairobi River which flows through the city. Founded in 1899 by the colonial authorities in British East Africa, as a rail depot on the Uganda Railway, Nairobi has grown to become East Africa's most cosmopolitan city with modern amenities supported by an ever-growing population. Home to thousands of Kenyan businesses and over 100 major international companies and organizations, including the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) and the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), Nairobi is an established hub for business and culture. In travel circles, it is popularly referred to as the Green City in the Sun.

Accessibility and Transport in and around of Nairobi

The city is well served by roads and railways. The main routes are southeast and south to Mombasa and Tanzania and northwest via the highlands to Lake Victoria and Uganda. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, 9 miles (15 km) to the southwest, is one of the chief international airports in Africa. Nairobi is served by highways that link Mombasa to Kampala in Uganda and Arusha in Tanzania. These are earmarked to ease the daily motor traffic within and surrounding the metro area. Major plans are being implemented in the need to decongest the city's traffic and the completion of Thika Road has given the city a much needed face-lift attributed to road's enhancement of global standards. Several projects have been completed (Syokimau Rail Station, the Eastern and Northern Bypasses) while numerous other projects are still underway. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is the largest airport in Kenya. Domestic travelers made up 40% of overall passengers. In February 2017, JKIA received a Category One Status from the FAA boosting the airport's status as a Regional Aviation hub. A number of morning and evening commuter trains connect the centre with the suburbs, but the city has no proper light rail, tramway, or rapid transit lines. A proposal has been passed for the construction of a commuter rail line.
