Arusha is a city in north eastern Tanzania and the capital of the Arusha Region. Arusha is surrounded by some of Africa's most famous landscapes and national parks. Arusha stands in the foothills of Mount Meru at an altitude of about 1,500m. Although the town is not usually a destination in itself, it is the most popular and convenient springboard from which to explore the legendary northern game-viewing circuit. The city is close to the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Lake Manyara National Park, Olduvai Gorge, Tarangire National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Arusha National Park on Mount Meru.
Arusha National Park close to Arusha Town offers some lovely walking in the foothills of Mount Meru and canoeing on the Momela Lakes, plus gentle game drives. There are two airports near Arusha Town: Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) that is 40km east of town, off the main highway between Arusha and the mountain. KIA is used for larger international flights from Kenya, Nairobi and Europe, as well as regional safari connections in Tanzania. The much smaller Arusha Airport, on the town's western fringes, is a minor hub for Tanzanian regional flights. Below are some popular short wildlife safaris and tours to Northern Tanzania destinations that start and end at Arusha Town;
If you are in Arusha but have limited time, this two day/one night safari packs in two of Tanzania's most beloved national parks. You'll have the chance to see the Big Five and plenty more as you travel to these two wonderful parks. Tarangire National Park, home to Tanzania's largest elephant population, is a fascinating park during the dry season when the Tarangire River becomes a vital source of water for animals throughout the region. Starting with Tarangire National Park, you'll begin your game drive across a rich vista of endless golden savannah that surrounds the Tarangire River. The river itself runs throughout the year and is a vital source of water for the animals of the region during the dry season. Lined with acacia and Baobab trees, the river is regularly visited by the park's large elephant population as well as other herbivores such as zebras and antelopes. We stay the night at Tarangire Safari Lodge (LD). Learn more about Tarangire National park.
An overnight stay in Tarangire is followed by a full day tour of Ngorongoro Crater; sometimes considered as the 8th Wonder of the World. Home to over 120 species of mammal including the fabled Big Five, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of the most sought after safari destinations in the world. It's a particularly good place to see the endangered black rhinoceros enjoying a lonely meal out on the grass plains, as well as a place to see large numbers of hippopotamus enjoying the cool water. From the comfort of your open-top vehicle, you'll be able to observe and photograph some of Africa's most recognisable faces. The crater is home to a large number of predators including lions, leopards, cheetahs, jackals, and hyenas, as well as a large population of wildebeest, zebras, antelope, cape buffalo, and more. It is truly one of Africa's premier safari destinations. After the thrills and excitement of the day, you will have a picnic lunch by the park's famous hippo pool. Thereafter, you will drive back to Arusha to arrive in the evening (BL) Learn more about Ngorongoro Crater.

On Day 1, we depart for the world famous Serengeti National Park. Your private driver guide will pick you at the Hotel at 8:30 and you depart to Serengeti National Park, via the beautiful high lying farmland of Karatu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Leaving the highlands behind, we descend into the heart of wild Africa the Serengeti National Park with its endless plains, rolling into the distance as far as the eye can see. We head to the central park area, known as the Seronera area, one of the richest wildlife habitats in the park, featuring the Seronera River, which provides a valuable water source to this area and therefore attracts wildlife well representative of most of the Serengeti's species. We arrive in time for lunch and enjoy an afternoon game drive in the Serengeti National Park until late afternoon when you will drive back to your camp for dinner and overnight.
On Day 2, waking up in the Serengeti is something really special. Sights, sounds and smells of Africa are all around us, and ahead is a full day of adventure in the world's most famous national park. After breakfast, we start today with the morning section of our game drive in Serengeti National Park, tracing the Big 5. We will proceed with game drives in these endless plains, until late afternoon as we find our way back to the comfort of your tented camp. Serengeti's wonders evolve subtly as the day progresses. The myriad animals and birds are the 'stars of the show' and Nature's dramas can unfold at any time. Of course, the animals don't work to any schedule, so we may find lion or leopard, elephant and zebra, cheetah and antelope at any time on our drives. In the late afternoon drive back to the comfort of your tented camp for dinner and overnight. Learn more about Serengeti National Park.
On Day 3, we head to the Ngorongoro Crater. After breakfast descend down the crater. Today we have plenty of time to enjoy another true spectacle, Ngorongoro Crater is often referred to as a wonder of the world and your game drives in the crater will show you why. You will have 6-7 hours of game drive in the crater. First, there's the volcanic caldera (the world's largest), full of grassland, forest and swamp, a setting of jaw-dropping beauty. Secondly, the permanent water of the crater floor supports a resident population of more than 25,000 large mammals. Here you'll find many of the reasons you chose to come on safari because there is very high possibility to spot all the Big 5 within one day: elephant, lion, leopard, hyena, jackal, wallowing hippo, waterbuck, baboons, even the rare black rhino finds shelter here. In the afternoon after full of game drives we ascend the crater and drive to Arusha to your hotel or to the airport for your next plan. Learn more about Ngorongoro Crater.
